Renia smiled at the sound of her footsteps. She welcomed the opportunity to stretch her legs, even if it meant another unpleasant conversation with the Grand Master. The light rattle of armor plating accompanied her, her two guardian escorts following a few steps behind.
In the early evening the halls were more or less empty, with the majority of the staff either dining or running errands in Venntown. It spared her the embarrassment of being frogmarched from her apartment to the Grand Master like a criminal.
What could he possibly want with her now? Sheâd proceeded with the work at a respectable rate, despite the constant distraction and everything that came with broken sleep. Perhaps she had made a mistake, mis-seen something.
No, I would have felt it. She shrugged away any doubt.
She paused at an intersection, unfamiliar with the layout in the mastersâ wing. A scribe of her level would not usually be permitted to enter, let alone walk freely here.
âThis way, please.â One of the slug guards took point, the smell of mucus and oil wafting her as he passed. Was it a he? It was almost impossible to tell. She held back long enough for the guard to reach a respectful distance before continuing on, still puzzling over the reason for her summons.
Perhaps itâs Dail.
Reniaâs work rate had suffered. Not by a wide margin, but surely enough to be noticed by the Grand Master. Caring for Dail took its tollâaccepting help with him had been difficult at first, but sheâd accepted it eventually after realizing just how difficult it would be to work with him constantly demanding her attention.
A distant slam registered in her mind, followed by heavyset footsteps and rattling armor. She moved aside instantly. Captain Garamond stormed past and away from them, chuntering and reddened with frustration. Renia frowned, and returned to her thoughts.
An office would be nice. Somewhere quiet I could work for a few hours during the day. She nodded to herself. It was the most likely explanation â no need to get worked up.
They arrived before double doors of oak, highly ornate. Carvings of books, quills, vines, and trees had been chiseled into them. It must have taken months of work. She jumped slightly as one of her escorts rang a bell, announcing their arrival.
âCome,â came the voice from inside. Her guards positioned themselves to either side of her, turning their backs to the doors before parting them. The low light of the afternoon hit her, blinding her for an instant as her eyes adjusted from the gloom of the corridor. She held her hand up to shield them as the most beautiful scent rushed at her from the doorway, a pleasing mixture of rose and honeysuckle.
âCome in, come in, before the heat escapes.â
Renia took a step forward as her vision returned. The silhouette of the Grand Master stood before her in wait, arms outstretched. She stepped into the room, hesitant, and wary of his change in mien since their last exchange.
She bowed at him briefly before her curiosity took control.
